Brightwave is a 14-person creative studio that, like a lot of small businesses, ran on a single heroic spreadsheet. It tracked revenue, project margins, and pipeline, and it was maintained almost entirely by one operations manager named Lena every Monday morning. The spreadsheet worked — right up until it didn't scale, and then it became the most fragile thing in the company.
The Monday ritual
Every week, Lena exported invoices from their billing tool, pulled deal stages from their CRM, and copied hours from their time tracker into the master sheet. Three exports, a dozen formulas, and roughly two hours of careful copy-paste. If she was out sick, the company effectively went blind for a week. If she fat-fingered a cell, a wrong number could sit in the founders' weekly review undetected.

There's a version of this story at almost every small company we talk to. Someone heroically maintains a spreadsheet until the day they realize the heroism was never the point. The point was the decisions on the other side of the numbers — and those get faster, calmer, and more confident the moment the dashboard starts updating itself.
